Overview
Abstract
The Pantanal of Mato Grosso is the largest floodplain on the planet - 230,000 square kilometres periodically flooded - and protects the largest fish reserve in South America. Declared a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, it contains elements of the Amazon rainforest, the Caatinga, the Brazilian savannah, the Atlantic rainforest and the Paraguayan Chaco. This fantastic biodiversity is home to around 700 different species of birds, 80 mammals, 260 fish and 50 reptiles. In the Pantanal, water sets the pace of life for humans and animals. In summer, from December to April during the rainy season, animals seek refuge in the highlands and nature is at its most luxuriant. From May onwards, the waters begin to recede. The river basin, composed of the Paraguai, Cuiabá, Piriqui and Sao Lorenço rivers, as well as thousands of other intermittent waterways, contains an enormous quantity of fish of all species and sizes. The Pousada Rio Mutum, 130 km from Cuiabá, the capital of Mato Grosso, is a beautiful eco-resort for nature lovers, nestled in one of the lush regions of the Pantanal, home to hundreds of species of wildlife, birds and fish. The lodge organises bird watching, horse riding and night-time excursions for guests to search for nocturnal animals. Other activities offered at the lodge include canoe trips, a visit to a local indigenous community and a photo safari on the Mutum River.,
Shared visits up to 2 participants.
