The presence of a rich volcanic substrate, due to the presence of a chain of now extinct volcanoes, and abundant rainfall make this region one of the greenest and most fertile in the world. Taupo rises on the shores of its namesake lake, the largest in New Zealand, born from the caldera of an ancient volcanic eruption in the heart of the North Island. Its blue waters, framed by the snow-capped peaks of Tongariro, make it an ideal base for nature and adventure. A few kilometres away, Huka Falls hurls thousands of litres of turquoise water into a rocky canyon, while the geothermal fields of Wairakei and Craters of the Moon bubble with steam and fuming pools. Trout fishing, hot-air balloon flights, lakeside trails and dips in thermal springs complete the experience. Taupo is the gateway to New Zealand's fire and water.
