It is one of the 48 glaciers fed by the Campo de Hielo Sur, a huge continental glacier located in Patagonia on the southern Andes, on the border between Chile and Argentina. It is the third largest ice cap in the world, after Antarctica and Greenland. The Perito Moreno Glacier owes its name to Francisco Pascasio Moreno, known as Perito (the expert). Francisco is very beloved in Argentina because with his expeditions in the 19th century, he played a fundamental role in mapping the region and its natural beauties. The Perito Moreno is famous for being a glacier in continuous and fast movement. Thanks to a cushion of water between the lake bottom and the base of the glacier, the Perito Moreno advances about 2 meters per day.
