Established in 1961, the Reserve is not protected as a national park, but as a game reserve; therefore, it is not administered by the Kenya Wildlife Service (the government institution for environmental protection) but by local district authorities. The park is located in Kajiado County, in southern Kenya near the border with Tanzania, not far from Mount Kilimanjaro. The territory covers an area of about 39,000 hectares of savannah, which falls entirely within the ecoregion of northern Acacia-Commiphora woodland and scrubland. Within the park, there are different environments ranging from the dried-up bed of Lake Ambosel to wetlands with sulfur springs, savannah, and forests.
