The name of the reserve comes from the name of the Masai people (who inhabit various areas in the Serengeti plain) and the Mara River, with an area of 320 km², entirely crossed by the Great Rift Valley. The most represented habitat is that of the African grassland or savannah, dotted with typical acacia plants. The reserve borders the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, with which it forms a single ecosystem. The reserve is known for its exceptional concentration of wildlife and for the famous Great Migration of wildebeest and zebras that takes place in April-May. Established in 1961, the Reserve is not protected as a national park, but as a game reserve; therefore, it is not administered by the Kenya Wildlife Service (the government institution for environmental protection) but by local district authorities.
