Malé, capital and the only true city of the Maldives, surprises travellers with its colourful density, so different from the resort islands that surround it. Packed onto a small island, it concentrates markets, mosques and buildings in a maze of lively streets where scooters and bicycles dart between pastel façades. The fish market and the produce market reveal the archipelago’s daily rhythm, while the historic Hukuru Miskiy, carved from coral, and the gold-domed Friday Mosque bear witness to local faith and craftsmanship. A short stroll leads to oceanfront promenades, city parks and street-food stalls.
