Day 5 — Livingstone (Victoria Falls Zambia) → Johannesburg
Born following the discovery of gold in 1886, today Johannesburg is a metropolis of eight million inhabitants and the economic engine of Africa, but it has never been the seat of political power. During apartheid, it was the center of resistance for black people and now it welcomes a multitude of ethnicities: Zulu and Sotho-speaking blacks, English and Afrikaans-speaking whites, immigrants from all over Africa, Indians, Chinese, Greeks, Portuguese, and Lebanese. The extremes of wealth and poverty are evident, but entire neighborhoods are being revitalized and the energy of the city is apparent.

Day 6 — Johannesburg → Vilanculos
I board a dhow for the crossing to the Bazaruto Archipelago, one of the largest marine reserves in southern Africa. We spend the day exploring the islands, snorkeling, and enjoying the beaches of this paradise. A day of sun, sea, beach, and adventure.
