Situated at nearly 600 metres above sea level, it covers an area of approximately 11,700 square kilometres. The province borders Myanmar to the north and Laos to the northeast.
Most of the territory is mountainous, with peaks reaching up to 1,500 metres in height. Several rivers flow through the valleys between the mountains, the most important being the Kok River, along which the city itself was built. This river serves as the main connection route with the neighbouring province of Chiang Mai, crossing the centre of Chiang Rai and passing through various tribal settlements and parks, where jungle excursions on elephant back traditionally begin.
At the northernmost tip of the province lies the area known as the “Golden Triangle,” where the Mekong and Ruak Rivers meet, forming the border between Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos. The surrounding highlands are home to several ethnic hill tribes, including the Akha, Lahu, Karen, and Mon peoples.
The region has a long history of small kingdoms dating back to the pre-Thai era, while the city of Chiang Rai itself was founded in 1262 by King Mengrai. It served as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom until Chiang Mai later surpassed it in importance.
