The island consists mainly of sand, coral and limestone rock, and has tropical vegetation characteristic of oceanic islands.
The name ‘Ilha de Mozambique’ is derived from the Portuguese term for the island of Mozambique, and its historical development is intimately linked to Portuguese colonisation. The island was the capital of Mozambique from 1507 to 1898, before the capital was moved to Maputo. The architecture of Ilha de Mozambique is one of its most fascinating features and testifies to its multicultural history. The oldest part of the island is the City of Stone, which dates back to the colonial period. This district is characterised by stone buildings, many of which were built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Among the main architectural sights are The Fortress of São Sebastião, The Church of São Paulo and The Governor's Palace. These buildings, along with other historical monuments and structures, have given the island a unique atmosphere, where history is intertwined with everyday life.
