The most represented habitat is that of the African grassland or savannah, dotted with typical acacia plants. The reserve borders the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, with which it forms a single ecosystem. The reserve is known for its exceptional concentration of wildlife and for the famous Great Migration of wildebeest and zebras that takes place in April-May. Established in 1961, the Reserve is not protected as a national park, but as a game reserve; therefore, it is not administered by the Kenya Wildlife Service (the government institution for environmental protection) but by local district authorities.
