Breakfast, departure to, PotosĂ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the highest city in the world, 4100 m above sea level, on a desolate, windswept plain. The city owes its existence to Cerro Rico (Rich Mountain), the richest source of silver the world had ever seen: its mines turned PotosĂ into one of the world’s wealthiest and largest cities. In the early seventeenth century its population was 160,000, far bigger than contemporary Madrid, and equal in size to London. However, this wealth was achieved at the expense of the lives of millions of indigenous forced labourers and African slaves. Day 11 — Colchani → Uyuni
Breakfast, full day tour of Salar de Uyuni, The Uyuni Salt Flat, Salar de Uyuni in Spanish, 3,656 m asl, 10,582 square km, is not a lake in the conventional sense: though below there is water, its uppermost layer consists of a thick, hard crust of salt, capable of supporting the weight of a car. So harsh and inhospitable is this perfectly flat white expanse, with unbroken chains of snowcapped mountains lining the far horizon, that it’s easy to believe you’re on another planet. During the wet season, from December to April, it’s covered by a thin layer of water that forms a giant mirror, reflecting the sky so neatly that the line of the horizon disappears. In this extreme enviroment only tenacious ecosystems can survive, including colonies of cacti and other hardy plants and flocks of flamingoes. Equally hardy are the isolated communities of Aymara and Quechua campesinos. But the Salar is attracting the attention of the world for its vast reserves of untapped lithium and the Bolivian government is discussing options and feasibility for its extraction and production, stop at nel mezzo del Salar for lunch, transfer to Uyuni.
