Madikwe Game Reserve stretches along the border with Botswana, on the edge of the Kalahari Desert, and ranks among South Africa's most exclusive wildlife reserves. The result of an ambitious reintroduction project launched in the 1990s, it is today home to the Big Five alongside the rare wild dogs, emblematic protagonists of these semi-arid lands. The landscape alternates bushveld, grassy plains and the dark profiles of the Dwarsberg hills, creating scenes of rare beauty for dawn and sunset safaris. Among its greatest assets is its malaria-free status, making it an ideal destination for families with children. The lodges, set in the most authentic nature, offer an intimate wildlife experience far from the crowds. Cape Town rises in one of the most spectacular natural settings on earth, hemmed between the ocean and the towering flat-topped wall of Table Mountain, which presides over South Africa’s most beloved city. The cableway to the summit unveils 360-degree views over the city, the peninsula and the Atlantic, while the trails of Table Mountain National Park — UNESCO-listed as part of the Cape Floral Region — wind through the world’s unique endemic fynbos vegetation. The historic heart reveals itself on foot around the Company’s Garden and the city-centre museums, while the Malay quarter of Bo-Kaap dazzles with its vividly painted houses and historic mosques, the legacy of a community with deep roots and a spice-rich cuisine to sample in its small eateries. Along the seafront, the V&A Waterfront blends a working harbour with markets, boutiques and seafood restaurants, and is the departure point for boats to Robben Island, the prison island where Nelson Mandela spent many years of captivity and which is now a place of memory. To the south the peninsula unfolds along scenic roads such as Chapman’s Peak Drive towards the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point, where the oceans seem to meet; along the way, Boulders Beach shelters a colony of African penguins. The beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton, beneath the Twelve Apostles, invite relaxation, while a short drive away the winelands of Constantia, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek offer tastings among vineyards and Cape Dutch architecture. Whitewashed cottages, colourful fishing boats and pale sand dunes welcome the visitor to Paternoster, one of the oldest and most charming fishing villages on the Atlantic coast of the Western Cape. Overlooking a wind-swept bay, the village is famous for its fresh crayfish and its restaurants serving the day’s catch alongside regional wines. Along the beach and in the nearby Cape Columbine Nature Reserve you can spot seabird colonies and, in season, whales offshore. Paternoster is an escape of peace and flavour, where the rhythm of the ocean sets the pace of the day.

Sodwana Bay opens onto the Indian Ocean along the coast of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park in KwaZulu-Natal, a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of South Africa's most spectacular diving destinations: its coral reefs, among the southernmost in the world, teem with tropical fish, sea turtles, manta rays and sharks. Between November and February turtles come ashore to nest, while whales and dolphins are spotted offshore. Pristine beaches, forest-cloaked dunes and crystalline waters make this coastal corner a paradise for diving, snorkelling and lovers of the wild sea.
